What to look for - well it is not just qualifications, compliance and technical expertise. What the owners of small businesses need is someone who understands all aspects about setting up a business and the problems which arise from it.

Make sure you use your accountant – talk regularly, ask questions and ensure that you get the answers to your queries in a way that you understand.

Then trust can build between you and your accountant. As a business owner you do not want to have to think about things such as year-ends, or capital gains. You want to be able to get on with the things that you are good at, which is running the business.
