Don’t tax yourself on a phishing expedition

We all love a good tax refund – the satisfaction of recovering some of our hard earned money from the clutches of the Government is a satisfying one in a world of ever increasing taxation and red tape. It is no surprise, therefore, that fraudsters see an opportunity here and ever more sophisticated “phishing” emails are targeting this area and promising tax repayments that sadly never materialise. They usually look very convincing, as if they are official, and dupe taxpayers into entering, as always, bank details that can then be defrauded.

A number of our clients have asked us about such emails, asking for reassurance that the emails are not genuine. Unfortunately, they are never for real and should be deleted. HM Revenue and Customs have a useful list of phishing emails and examples with a latest round being sent out in September.

If in doubt, ask us, and remember – treat all such emails with extreme suspicion and never give out any personal details.
